The Weston, Yorkshire Sculpture Park

The Weston is a gallery, shop, and café at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, built on the site of a former quarry within the park’s 18th-century Bretton Estate. Constructed from a Douglas Fir timber frame, the café space contrasts with the mass of the concrete of the gallery and has a more homely and inviting feel with a wood burning stove and furniture specifically chosen to give a more domestic atmosphere.

Our work:

A construction, design and management contract for the timber structure, doors and glazing. This evolved from the original design intent which involved a certified glazing system being fixed to the front of an existing timber structure. Early in the design process it became evident that the tolerances for the timber frame structure fell outside the criteria required for the glazing system. Drawing on Pacegrade’s flexibility and extensive expertise, the solution was to revise the approach, tasking Pacegrade with delivering both the timber structure and the vertical façade.
